The Y Operator in Perl

The y operator takes a value from the right side operand(s) and assigns it to the left side operand. This operator is used to test for the presence of a value or variable in a string, list, tuple or set.

An arbitrary operator U mapping one normed space X into another normed space Y is compact if and only if it is a self-adjoint operator. This concept is reminiscent of the structure of symmetric matrices.

Definition

The y operator is an arithmetic operation that shifts bits to the right. It is similar to the XOR and OR operators. The y operator is used in programming to translate given sequences into other strings. It is also used in conjunction with other logical operators like ‘and’, ‘or’, and ‘xor’ in propositional logic.

In topological vector spaces, an arbitrary operator from X into Y is called strongly continuous if it defines a sequence that is bounded on both X and Y (that is, the eigenvalues of the operator are all finite); and a linear operator is said to be compact if its image in Y is a relatively compact set in Y.

These properties can be formally defined by the notion of the domain of definition of an operator. This is a subset of X with which the operator is well-defined; for example, it can be defined as the set of all sets such that the image of the operator in Y is contained in one of these.

Operation

There are various operations that can be performed on variables. Some of these are numeric, while others are binary. Numeric operations include addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

Binary operators are those that require two arguments. Examples of binary operations are increment and decrement. The increment operator ++ is the same as x += 1; while the decrement operator — is the same as y = y – 1. These shorthand operators offer a faster and more efficient way to write code than simply writing a series of steps to perform the same operation.

Binary and numeric operations are also used to compare values. These comparison operators are known as comparison statements. These are very common in data types like lists, tuples, sets and dictionaries. Other operators that can be used in these data types are the in and not in membership operators. These operate on string and array values to test for their presence in a sequence.

Characteristics

In Perl, the y operator is used to translate characters from a given search list into corresponding replacement characters. It is a character-to-character transformation operator like the lc() function and the uc() function.

The characteristic of an operator is the set of eigenfunctions of the inverse operator in a vector space; it may also be referred to as its domain of definition or range. For example, the characteristic of a linear operator is the set of all functions (or their derivatives) on a vector space whose eigenvectors are orthonormal.

A multi-valued linear operator can be distinguished from a regular linear one by its dense domain of definition in the vector space. This is because the inverse of a multi-valued operator is a regular function in the vector space, and the set of all functions on a vector space is closed under the operations of addition and subtraction. It is also possible to distinguish between the linear and non-linear operators by the characteristics of their eigenfunctions.

Examples

The logical AND operator && computes the logical AND of its operands. The result of x & y is true only if both x and y evaluate to true; the right-hand operand doesn’t get evaluated. This behavior is known as short-circuit evaluation, named after computer scientist John McCarthy.

The increment and decrement operators are shortcuts that provide a quicker, more efficient way to add or subtract value from a variable. The expression x++ is the same as x += 1; the expression y– is the same as y = y – 1.

The membership operators in and not in test whether a value or variable is present in a sequence, such as a string, list, tuple or set. The not in example returns False if ‘hello’ is not present in message, while the in example returns True. Both operators use short-circuit evaluation. The logical OR operator | also computes the logical OR of its operands. If x or y evaluates to false, the result of x | y is always false; the right-hand operand never gets evaluated.

The Voices of Opera Ebony

The longest operating black opera company in America started in the living room of Benjamin Matthews, bass-baritone along with co-founders Wayne Sanders, pianist, and Sister Mary Elise Sisson. For decades, the company provided a professional platform to Black artists on and off the stage. They toured domestically and internationally. Their legacy is a pool of voices that have gone on to successful careers on the opera and musical theater stages of North America and Internationally.

Benjamin Matthews

Benjamin Matthews is a family nurse practitioner at Silver Falls Dermatology. He enjoys working with his patients, and is an avid music lover. He has also performed as a studio engineer for progressive rock band Mostly Autumn.

Founded in 1973, Opera Ebony has brought fully staged performances to New York City’s Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall, the Brooklyn Academy of Music and the Langston Hughes Theater (now the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture). They have also presented world premieres and commissioned works, including Frederick Douglass by Dorothy Rudd Moore and Oh Freedom! by Leo Edwards and a workshop performance of Harriet Tubman by composer Leo Edwards.

The company has served as a professional platform for thousands of American artists, administrators and technical staff, providing an opportunity to refine their talents and perfect their craft. The legacy of Opera Ebony has continued internationally in venues from Iceland to Russia, and as far afield as Belize.

Wayne Sanders

Wayne Sanders is a shareholder in the firm of Sneed, Vine & Perry and is the Chairperson of the firm’s litigation practice. He has extensive experience handling a broad range of litigation, including commercial and personal matters. His work includes representing clients in state and federal court as well as in a variety of arbitration proceedings. He works closely with clients to develop a comprehensive litigation strategy that addresses their specific needs and goals.

Born in DePere, Wisconsin, Wayne earned his Bachelor of Music degree magna cum laude from St. Norbert College and his Master of Music degree in composition from Wichita State University. He also studied in Germany, where he received his Hochschule fur Musik degree. Wayne has performed with Opera Ebony for decades and has toured nationally and internationally. He is the Co-Founder of the longest continuously operated Black Opera Company in America. He has also performed with international soprano Pretty Yende. In addition, he has worked as an accompanist and has sung in concerts with many international artists.

Margaret Harris

Margaret Harris, born in 1943, was a child prodigy pianist who played her first recital at age 4. Her talent led her to conduct the orchestras of Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles, and other cities. She also played solo piano recitals around the United States and abroad. In addition, she worked as a Broadway musical director. She also composed television scores, two ballets, and an opera.

She was also involved in the development of two Black opera companies. She founded the National Opera Ebony and served as its general director. Harris also wrote and directed several plays.

Margaret Harris was born in 1905 in Hayes, Kent, England. She studied theatre design with her sister Sophie and Elizabeth Montgomery, whom she later joined as a theatrical design team known as Motley. She designed both stage and opera costumes for theatre and film. She was also an accomplished sculptor. Her work can be seen in the National Museum of American Art.

Eldric Bashful

Eldric Bashful works as General Director for Opera Ebony. He started this role in 2019. He is responsible for ensuring that the company meets its goals and objectives. He also oversees the organization’s day-to-day operations.

In a recent interview, he spoke about his work with the company. He discussed the importance of promoting diversity in classical music. He added that Opera Ebony is committed to highlighting the contributions of minority artists.

The non-profit has a strong history of providing opportunities for diverse audiences and developing the next generation of operatic talent. Its members have performed internationally. The organization has also won numerous awards. Its mission is to provide career opportunities for aspiring singers, directors, and musicians. It also supports emerging young talent from local schools and colleges. This year, it has recruited a number of new members to its leadership team. POSIX

POSIX (Portable Operating System Interface for UNIX) provides common interfaces that help software developers write applications that are portable across systems. It also defines a set of fundamental services that make applications more efficient, such as the ability to read from and write to files. It is a family of standards that includes IEEE 1003.1-2008 and ISO/IEC 9945-1:2009.

GNU features have made their way into POSIX and have helped to shape the POSIX standard as it evolved. Giacomo Catenazzi notes that POSIX’s definition of diff and patch borrows from GNU’s versions of those commands.

While POSIX is not universal, many UNIX-like systems support it, including Linux and Apple OS X (since 10.5 Leopard). The majority of graphical interfaces, database interfaces, object/binary code portability, and system configurations are outside the scope of POSIX. It is important to note that the POSIX specifications are not the same as the Linux kernel APIs, which are a different specification.

UNIX

UNIX was developed at AT&T Bell Labs in the 1970s and has become one of the most widely used operating systems in the world. It is highly stable and secure, and it can be run on computers of any size from desktops to supercomputers. UNIX is also well-suited for networking, and it has contributed to the reshaping of computing as a network-centric industry.

The kernel of a UNIX system is a memory-resident control program that manages the machine’s resources and presents them to user applications as a coherent system. It also hides the details of the machine architecture from the user. This allows a single version of the system to run on a variety of hardware without modification, which is a significant cost savings.

The UNIX system features a multitasking system that permits multiple users to share computer resources simultaneously. Its time-sharing mechanism divides the CPU’s time into small segments, known as “time slices,” for each user. Each time slice lasts for a period of time that is predetermined by the system.

Windows

Microsoft Windows is the most widely used graphical operating system in the world. It is available for mainstream personal computers and tablets (as of SS market share data), as well as a variety of other devices such as e-readers and mobile phones. It supports a large number of user interface languages, making it the most versatile OS for consumer applications. It also features a software virtual memory scheme that allows applications to be larger than the physical memory of the machine: code and data segments would move in and out of memory as processor control switched between applications.

It does not have file protection to prevent unauthorized access to files or memory protection to prevent one application from reading or writing memory occupied by a different application.

Linux

Aside from its kernel, Linux has a wide array of software packages that allow users to customize the system to meet their needs. It also includes a number of popular software development tools, including git for distributed source control; vim and emacs for text editing; and compilers and interpreters for various programming languages.

Linux has a robust command line interface, making it ideal for users who need to perform advanced operations quickly and efficiently. Blending Eastern and Western influences: Opera in Japan during the Meiji Restoration

Opera in Japan

During the time of Meiji Restoration when Japan opened up to foreign trade, culture and ideas opera gained a foothold. Traveling opera companies brought performances like Madama Butterfly featuring Geraldine Farrar, Enrico Caruso and Antonio Scotti to Japanese audiences.

While it is true that the art form is looked upon as western import, it cannot be denied that the music has been kept alive by a number of works which have substantial merit and worth.

Origins

Opera is a genre of music that blends the elements of drama and acting. Its popularity exploded during the Romantic era (1830-1900) when grand operas got bigger, louder and longer with more elaborate ornamentation bolstered by simpler harmonic structures.

Travelling western opera companies began visiting Japan in the early days of the Meiji Restoration when Japan opened up to outside influence, culture and ideas. One amateur group from Yokohama staged a production of Arthur Sullivan’s operetta Cox and Box just four years after its London premier.

Puccini spied the operatic potential in David Belasco’s one-act play Madame Butterfly based on John Luther Long’s 1898 short story and worked with libretto writers Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa to produce an Italian version of the work which premiered in Milan in 1904. The opera was to become an emblem of the dark clouds of US-Japanese relations just a year before Pearl Harbor.

Influence

In addition to the renowned Bunka-Keikan and NHK Hall, Tokyo also has many theaters which stage opera, and it is possible to see productions by visiting companies from Europe and North America. Nevertheless, many directors do not try to bring traditional Japanese cultural elements into their opera adaptations. Rather, they prioritize the creation of an aesthetically coherent whole.

Nonetheless, there are some examples of opera borrowings and adaptations within the Takarazuka Revue. For example, the Kimura-Kai team’s productions Freedom: Mister Carmen and Fumetsu no toge, based on Vec Makropulos, reversed the gender roles of the original opera. This was intended to create a character that appealed to the female audience and to showcase otokoyaku sex appeal.

Despite this, much research remains to be done on the links between the Takarazuka Revue and opera. This includes the impact of gender roles and singing styles on the Revue, as well as the extent to which the Revue borrows or adapts opera music.

Repertoire

During the 1950s a second wave of opera adaptations emerged from Takarazuka Revue musicals. These were usually based on the plots of western operas but with a new twist. The top otokoyaku would play the heroine, rather than the male lead as is traditional in the west. The Takarazuka team created such musicals as Turandot: Hououden no bouken (1952), Gekijou: Jose to Carmen (1951) and the 1956 Kismet: Unmei.

The music for these operas was composed by Yamada Kosaku who had been a pupil of Bruch and Wolf in Berlin. He infused the melodic style of German Romanticism with Japanese inflections. This laid down the foundation for modern Japanese opera. It also paved the way for a more realistic approach to the melodrama of kabuki and sanken opera. Today Tokyo has many venues where opera is performed, although there is no resident company. It is a form which thrives as Japan continues to open up more fully to western influence, ideas and music.

Performances

When Japan opened its doors to western technology during the Meiji Period, it also welcomed foreign arts. One of these was opera which became a popular form of entertainment. The Japanese studied, imitated and eventually produced their own classical genre of opera.

The result is a hybrid of eastern and western ideas and themes. Though many have criticized this as merely a form of imitation, it can be viewed as the evolution of an art into something uniquely its own.

This season at Japan Society we present the North American Premiere of Catapult Opera’s reimagining of Yukio Mishima’s modern noh play Hanjo (September 14) and NYC-based director NJ Agwuna’s gender-swapped drama I’m Trying to Understand You, But…(October 28 – 30). Plus 2022 marks the world premiere of a new opera commissioned by Japan Society, note to a friend(January 12 – 15), composed by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer David Lang who reimagined texts from esteemed writer Ryunosuke Akutagawa whose short stories are famous for their eloquent exploration of human relationships and death.

Passionate and Defiant: The Sensual Tale of Carmen Unveiled

Carmen Opera Review

Carmen is a fiery, independent gipsy woman who lives outside society’s norms. She seduces and destroys Don Jose.

Based on the novel by Prosper Merimee, Georges Bizet’s opera is a sexy, dramatic opera. Though initially unpopular, it is now the world’s third most popular opera. It bridges the tradition of French opera comique and verismo.

Plot

In the first act, the scene is set in a square, surrounded by guards and military personnel. Micaela enters, a young peasant, who is searching for her lover Jose. The guards tell her he is not there. She gives him a letter and a kiss from her mother, which he chastely receives.

After this, the gypsies Frasquita and Mercedes sing one of the most famous pieces from the opera. Gypsies always sing about their free, wandering life, and they do so again here, with a chorus that praises the nature of freedom.

A toreador, Escamillo, then enters with a bit of fanfare and sings the famous “Votre toast je peux vous le rendre”. He takes a fancy for Carmen but she rejects his advances. Jose arrives to see the commotion and, in a jealous rage, stabs her. Afterwards, the crowd cheers him. The commotion has convinced everyone but Jose that she is a witch. She tries to convince him she is not, but he still refuses.

Characters

Carmen is a gypsy girl who works at a cigarette factory and belongs to a band of nomad smugglers and thieves. She is a rebellious character with an attitude of erotism and love for freedom. Robinson says that she is a symbol of wildness and anarchy, while Don Jose represents order and control.

The soldiers at Lillas Pastia’s club are obsessed with the beautiful Carmen and her dances. But repressed corporal Don José is not interested. When Micaela returns with a letter and kiss from Jose’s mother, he is ready to heed his mother’s advice and return home to marry.

Then a brawl breaks out at the factory between Carmen and another woman, and she injures her. Zuniga orders Jose to tie her up, but she charms him into letting her go and escapes. Then she sings her famous Habanera and seduces the soldiers into following her. As she leads them to her gypsy village, they become enraged at her refusal to obey orders.

Music

When Carmen premiered in Paris in March 1875, it shocked and scandalised audiences with its blatant sexuality, on-stage murder and unflattering depiction of gypsies. Bizet died soon after, but his opera went on to become a mainstay of the opera house. Today, it’s a beloved classic packed with songs you’ll recognize and a dramatic narrative that ticks all the right Romantic opera boxes.

From the whirling habanera to the high-energy Prelude, the music in carmen is unforgettable. And that’s not just because it contains cracking sing-along melodies like “L’amour est un oiseau rebelle” and Don Jose’s heart-wrenching Flower Song. The score also paints vivid pictures of character traits with ominous bass drum thumps for Escamillo’s death, sweet and flighty chirping for Carmen’s friends Mercedes and Frasquita, and a portentous ‘fate’ motif that recurs throughout the opera.

Lyrics

The music of Carmen is a mix of traditional French opera and Italian verismo. The most famous songs from this opera are the Toreador Song and Habanera. Both of these pieces feature the castanet, a popular instrument in Spanish culture. These instruments make the opera sound more authentic and capture the spirit of Spain.

The story of the gypsy factory girl who seduces a soldier and his mother’s love for her is timeless. It embodies the complexities and contradictions of human relationships and demonstrates that love is not something to be taken lightly.

Exploring Opera: Music, Acting, Lyrics, Set Design, and Audience Experience

Opera Theatre

Opera theatre tells dramatic stories using music and spectacle. It requires a special kind of musician with the ability to translate words into musical themes, and actors who can portray their roles without spoken dialogue.

Early operas were based on mythological themes and peopled with noble characters. Later, composers like Gluck sought to balance music and poetry or text, creating a form of sung drama known as recitative.

Music

An opera is a dramatic musical play that includes music, singers and a stage. It is usually performed in a large, special building called an opera house. It has a large backstage area, a pit for the orchestra and seating for an audience.

Musicians play the music of an opera from a written score. The librettist may also write musical themes that recur throughout the opera to identify characters or situations.

Many composers use recurrent musical motifs to suggest emotions, such as the sorrow of Tristan and Isolde or the lovers’ impending doom in the Love Potion. The music can create atmosphere that words alone cannot convey. Some modern operas experiment with atonality, serialism and other musical styles that challenge traditional tonality. Most operas require the use of a chorus.

Acting

Several people are required to tell an opera’s story: actors who sing, librettists who adapt texts to fit the music, and directors who shape how the action is conveyed. Costumes, special effects and props also are utilized to create the world in which the story unfolds.

For centuries, opera performers believed they were creating a new art form in which music and poetry or text fused into an inseparable whole. Over time, the balance shifted to favor the music and away from the drama, but broad cultural movements like Romanticism and Orientalism often spawned parallel operatic traditions as well.

Although musical theater is a more recent addition to the theatrical canon, some composers like Stephen Sondheim have written works that straddle the line between opera and musical theater. These shows feature singing characters that may require dancing skills as well.

Lyrics

The music and lyrics of an opera are both important elements of the art form. The music score provides the mood and emotion while the libretto carries the story and character dialogue.

Verdi (1813-1901), for example, used high tragedy as a means to express strong emotions: Rigoletto concerns the court jester’s unwitting revenge; Nabucco explores the longing of captives for their homeland.

Wagner (1813-1883) took a different approach, creating the Gesamtkunstwerk, or total work of art, in which drama, staging and music would forge a powerful unity. His works often featured sung dialog punctuated with recitative, or sung speech, and his musical language employed recurrent melodic motifs to suggest characters or events. In the 21st century, composers such as George Gershwin (Porgy and Bess), Leonard Bernstein (Candide) and John Adams (Nixon in China) have used popular musical styles to create new English-language operas.

Set Design

The set designer brings to life the director’s vision for a production by building the physical environment in which the action takes place. This includes rooms, buildings and outdoor space as well as furnishings, props and backgrounds.

For example, the play “Windfall” by Norm Foster requires the set designer to design flats into a backdrop that indicates a wealthy family home. The set designer also situates doors for entrances and exits either as the playwright’s instructions dictate (a character goes into a games room), or to work within the limitations of the stage facility.

It is important for the set designer to plan ahead and sketch where all movable pieces like furniture and background elements will be placed, using an overhead perspective. This will help them make sure that the audience can see everything.

Audience

The art of opera is universal and appeals to people around the world for passion, recreation, education, and solace. The scores are written to evoke feelings that are human and not elitist, but the way that people experience the opera is different depending on their culture, age, and personal history.

Bringing new audience members into the theatre can help grow a long-term audience. This means that they will attend performances regularly and may start to seek out other opportunities to explore the music, stories, and creative interpretations that opera has to offer.
